Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the process of improving online content so search engines and AI-powered platforms can understand, retrieve and present it as a direct answer to a user's
question.
It can increase visibility across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, featured snippets, People Also Ask results and voice assistants.
AEO builds on search engine optimization rather than replacing it. A website still needs to be crawlable, indexed, relevant, trustworthy and useful.
The difference is that Answer Engine Optimization places more focus on direct answers, semantic meaning, identifiable entities, credible evidence and passages that can be quoted or cited inside an AI-generated response.
Calibrate Commerce helps businesses connect these AEO requirements with technical SEO, content strategy, structured data and measurable commercial outcomes.
AEO matters because search is no longer limited to a list of blue links. People increasingly ask complete, detailed questions and expect a clear summary rather than browsing several websites to piece together an answer.
Around 60% of searches now end without a click, with users getting answers directly from AI tools without visiting a source website (Wordtracker, 2025, via Neil Patel). In categories where Calibrate Commerce clients operate, ecommerce, financial services, real estate, this means product discovery, comparison queries, and service questions are increasingly resolved before a user ever lands on a brand's site. AEO is not a future-proofing exercise. It is a current visibility gap.
They may search through Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, voice assistants or traditional search results. This creates a wider visibility opportunity for brands. A page does not always need to hold the first traditional organic position to provide value, it may still be selected as a supporting source within an AI-generated response
Google confirms that its AI search features remain connected to its core Search ranking and quality systems.
AI answer engines retrieve information that helps them build a relevant, accurate and useful response. There is no universal public checklist that controls source selection across every platform. Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity use different combinations of retrieval, ranking, grounding and generation.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use information from the Google Search index. Google explains that these features use core ranking systems and retrieval-augmented generation, also known as RAG, to find relevant and current web pages.
The system can then review specific information from those pages and display links that support the generated response. Google may also use query fan-out, running several related searches across subtopics and data sources to understand different parts of a complex question.
A page generally needs to be indexed, eligible to appear with a search snippet, technically accessible, relevant and compliant with Google Search policies before it can be considered as a supporting source.
Google does not require special AI markup or a separate optimization process for these features. Its advice remains focused on helpful, reliable and people-first content supported by solid SEO foundations.
ChatGPT search can retrieve current information from the web and may display inline citations within its answers. Users can select these citations or open the Sources panel to view the original pages.
OpenAI does not publish one fixed ranking formula that guarantees citation visibility. Its official guidance states that ranking uses several factors intended to surface reliable and relevant information.
Websites must also allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl their pages if they want to be considered for ChatGPT search results. OpenAI states that websites blocking OAI-SearchBot will not be surfaced through its search crawler in ChatGPT search results.
What Factors Matter Most for ChatGPT Citations?
A study by NP Digital tested over 80 possible factors to understand why ChatGPT recommends certain brands in its responses. Six factors rose to the top (Neil Patel / NP Digital, 2025):
• Brand mentions: the more the brand is cited across the web, the higher the likelihood of ChatGPT surfacing it
• Reviews: quality and volume of customer reviews, especially on third-party sites
• Relevancy: whether the site's content matches the user's query and offers helpful context
• Age: older, more established brands tend to be trusted more often by AI models
• Recommendations: listicles and curated 'best of' roundups still influence ChatGPT outputs
• Authority: high-authority domains with credible backlinks and consistent content earn more inclusion

Perplexity describes its answers as grounded in real-time web sources with inline citations. For publishers, this makes factual accuracy, topical relevance, clear source relationships and accessible page content especially important.
The central lesson is simple: answer engines do not cite a page only because it contains the right keyword. They retrieve passages that directly help explain, confirm or support an answer.
AEO and traditional SEO share the same foundations, but they focus on different types of visibility.
These disciplines should not operate separately. Google's guidance is clear that established SEO practices remain relevant because its generative features are rooted in Search ranking and quality systems. AEO and GEO build on that SEO foundation rather than replacing it.
1. Make your brand entity consistent:
Use the same name, description, and contact details across your website, Google Business Profile, and third-party directories. AI systems need to recognise the brand before they can recommend it.
2. Earn third-party mentions
Customer reviews, press coverage, industry roundups, and directory listings all signal credibility. Brand mentions across trusted external sources are among the strongest factors for AI citation.
3. Answer questions directly
Identify the questions your customers ask before and after purchase. Create dedicated content that answers each one with a clear, immediate response before expanding with evidence.
4. Allow the right crawlers access
Confirm that OAI-SearchBot is not blocked in your robots.txt file and that key pages are indexed and eligible for search snippets.
5. Build consistent publishing authority
accurate author attribution, credible inbound links, and original expert content published consistently strengthen citation potential over time.
6. Track where competitors appear
Search your priority prompts in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. The gaps between your brand and competitors show where AEO work is most needed.
AEO content should make the answer easy to locate, understand and verify. That does not mean every article needs to be short. It means each important section should communicate its main point clearly.
Answer the Question Immediately
Place a direct answer below the relevant heading. For straightforward questions, lead with a concise answer that fully resolves the basic query, often within one short paragraph, before expanding with context, evidence, and examples. The goal is to make the answer immediately identifiable, not to hit a specific word count.
Use Question-Based Headings
Structure sections around the language people naturally use. Useful headings include: What is AEO? How does AEO work? Is AEO different from SEO? Does schema improve AEO? How do you measure AEO performance? These headings align content with conversational and answer-based search intent.
Make Every Section Self-Contained
Each section should make sense when read on its own. An AI system may retrieve a passage without using the surrounding article. Avoid vague references such as 'as discussed earlier' when the missing context is required to understand the answer.
Add First-Party Expertise
Generic summaries are easy to reproduce and difficult to distinguish. More valuable content includes original data, expert commentary, testing results, internal frameworks, case studies and industry-specific examples.
For ecommerce brands specifically, AEO opportunities exist at every stage of the customer journey: product comparison queries ('best [product type] under [price]'), category questions ('which [product] is right for [use case]'), and post-purchase questions ('how to use / install / return [product]') are all AEO targets.
A product category page that directly answers 'what is the difference between X and Y?' has a structural advantage over a page that simply lists products. Customer service conversation data, the real questions customers ask before buying, is one of the most underused AEO content sources available to ecommerce brands.
Support Claims With Reliable Sources
Use primary sources whenever possible. Link directly to official documentation, original research, company data or recognised industry bodies. The connection between the evidence and the claim should be obvious.
An entity is a clearly identifiable person, company, product, location, service or concept. Search engines and AI systems try to understand these entities and how they relate to one another.
Entity optimization makes these relationships clearer. It can include using a consistent company name, creating detailed author and organization pages, describing services precisely, linking related topics and maintaining matching business information across the website. External mentions from relevant and credible sources can also strengthen an entity's digital footprint.
Schema markup provides explicit information about page elements. Google says structured data can help it understand and classify page content, while also making certain pages eligible for rich search results. Relevant schema types may include Article, Organization, Person, Product, Service, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage.
Content cannot be selected if answer engines cannot access or understand the page. AEO therefore requires many of the same technical foundations as SEO.
Important areas include crawlable URLs, correct indexation, fast loading, mobile usability, logical internal links, XML sitemaps, canonical tags and descriptive title tags. Pages should also have a clear heading structure, accessible text, limited duplication and accurate author and publisher information.
Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Google also does not require an llms.txt file or special AI markup for visibility within its generative Search features. Focus first on making important content technically accessible, indexable and easy to navigate.
AEO measurement is less standardised than traditional SEO reporting. Brands should therefore combine AI visibility metrics with traffic, engagement and conversion data.
Google introduced dedicated generative AI performance reporting in Search Console in June 2026, giving site owners more direct visibility into impressions from features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Visibility without business impact should not be the final goal.
At Calibrate Commerce, we group AEO work into four connected layers. Every layer must be in place before the next one creates full value.
Most AEO audits focus on Layer 2 (content structure) while neglecting Layer 1 (technical accessibility) or Layer 4 (commercial measurement). A page with perfect answer structure that cannot be crawled by OAI-SearchBot will never appear in ChatGPT. A page that earns AI citations but sends visitors to a broken landing page creates visibility without value. All four layers must work together.
Calibrate Commerce's AI search visibility audit covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity across your priority prompts, showing where the brand appears, where competitors are being cited, and which pages to improve first.

AEO Replaces SEO
AEO depends on crawlability, indexation, authority, relevance and content quality. Without strong SEO foundations, answer systems may never discover the page.
Schema Guarantees AI Citations
Schema can clarify meaning and support rich-result eligibility. It cannot force an answer engine to use or cite the content. Google states that no special structured data is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
AEO Content Must Be Extremely Short
Direct answers are useful, but complex questions still need context, examples and supporting evidence. A short definition can introduce a detailed, valuable article.
Publishing More AI Content Improves Visibility
Volume alone does not create authority. Google warns that scaled AI-generated content produced without added user value may violate its spam policies. Quality, originality and usefulness matter more than publishing frequency.
Before investing in Answer Engine Optimization, ask:
• Which customer questions have the highest commercial value?
• Is the website crawlable and indexed?
• Which AI platforms does the target audience use?
• Does existing content answer questions directly?
• Are important products, services and entities explained clearly?
• Are claims supported by reliable evidence?
• Does the content add first-party expertise?
• Are author and brand credentials visible?
• Is structured data accurate and valid?
• Which pages already receive AI citations?
• How will mentions, referral traffic and conversions be measured?
• Which competitors currently appear for priority prompts?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the process of improving content so search engines and AI platforms can retrieve, understand and present it as a direct answer.
Yes, but they overlap heavily. SEO improves visibility across traditional search results, while AEO focuses more directly on answer extraction, conversational searches, AI citations and brand mentions.
Publish accessible, accurate and well-structured content that directly answers real questions. Use clear headings, reliable evidence, original insights and consistent information about important entities. The site must also allow relevant OpenAI search crawlers to access its pages.
Schema can help search engines understand page elements and may support eligibility for rich results. However, it does not guarantee that a page will appear in an AI-generated answer.
Google says its AI features use the Search index, core ranking systems, retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out to find information that supports a response.
AEO can be measured through AI citations, brand mentions, prompt visibility, topic coverage, AI referral traffic and conversions from visitors who arrive through answer platforms.
Key Takeaways
• AEO improves visibility across direct and AI-generated answers
• It builds on SEO rather than replacing it
• Clear answers, original evidence and credible sources make content more useful
• Entity clarity helps systems understand meaning and relationships
• Schema supports interpretation but does not guarantee citations
• Technical SEO remains essential for discovery and indexing
• Performance should be measured through citations, mentions, visibility, traffic and conversions
Calibrate Commerce helps businesses improve visibility across traditional search and AI-powered answer platforms.
Calibrate Commerce approaches AEO through the four-layer framework above: Accessibility, Answerability, Authority, and Commercial Impact. Our AEO engagements begin with an AI search visibility audit, assessing where the brand currently appears across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, where competitors are being cited, and which content gaps are costing the brand visibility on commercially valuable prompts. We then work through the four layers systematically: technical accessibility, content restructuring for answer extraction, authority signal development, and measurement connected to business outcomes rather than citation counts alone.
